5 Ways to Turn Your Home into a Green Home

“Going Green” in your home is not only good for the planet, but it can be a good investment for your biggest investment.  While the formulas is simple, that the less energy you use, the more money you can save, every improvement, whether big or small, will require some sort of commitment from you to achieve.  And that can be intimidating.

So, in honor of Earth Day this week, we have 5 ways to turn your home into a “Green Home,” making it not only better for the environment, but better for your pocket book too.

Replace Light Bulbs

Sure, turning off your lights saves energy, but what if you could save energy when they are on?  Did we just blow your mind?  By switching your light bulbs to energy-efficient LED light bulbs, your lights will not only last 25 times longer, but it will use 75% less energy than your traditional bulbs. Also, from a convenience standpoint, LED lights immediately illuminate and, when they need replaced, they give you a little warning by dimming slightly, instead of just leaving you in the dark.

Cleaning Products That Are Clean

While cleaning products leave your house smelling and looking fresh, they can also be full of harmful chemicals that can do more harm than good to you and the environment. Just like your food, you gotta read the labels of cleaning products.  Look for eco-friendly products and, if you really want to be better by saving a ton money on green cleaning supplies, consider becoming your very own Mr. Clean and make your own products. Simple ingredients such as baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar and soap are very effective cleaners.

Don’t Let The Air Out

Cracks around your windows are a huge drain on your energy as they let warm or cold air out, causing your furnace or air conditioner to work overtime.  Seal any air leaks with weather stripping or caulking to keep the air in your house, and your money in your wallet.

Embrace Using A Programmable Thermostat

Your energy bill is high because of your heating and cooling costs. If you want to make your home more energy efficient, a programmable thermostat is a great way to help you manage these costs even when you are not home. Programmable thermostats allows you to program your air conditioning at a higher temperature while you are at work and then make it an ice box during the evenings when you are home. The scheduling allows you to use less energy.

Get Low…Flow

Water conservation is a great way to take care of Mother Earth and it starts in your kitchen and bathroom.  Low-flow fixture options can help you save on your water and heating bills. They use significantly less water than traditional fixtures, which, by switching, could save thousands of gallons of water each year.  You literally can pay for less water while reducing your water heating costs by over 50 percent!

We only have one Earth and all of us need to do our part to make sure it is here for generations to come.  And when it comes to your house, small changes can make big savings for the environment and your wallet.  Finding ways to help make our environment better will lead you to a better life, both inside and out of your home.
